JOHNSON CITY – (October 28, 2021) A new agreement was inked today by leaders at Elizabethton High School and East Tennessee State University that allows high school students at EHS to earn one credit hour at ETSU.
Elizabethton High School students who take the EHS Senior Capstone Course and complete certain requirements will be able to receive credit for the ETSU course, “Introductory to the University,” if they enroll at ETSU.
“Hundreds of our current students are graduates of Elizabethton High School, and all of them are now on a transformative, life-changing journey to earning a college degree – a degree that will allow them to make a difference in their communities and to improve the quality of life of others,” said ETSU Provost and Senior Vice President for Academics Dr. Kimberly McCorkle. “We are grateful to have this opportunity to provide this opportunity for EHS students to begin preparing for the university experience and to earn college credit at the same time.”
EHS students will be required to complete course requirements, which include completing and presenting a digital portfolio, participating in a day-long immersive experience at ETSU, and participating in a series of activities co-sponsored by EHS and ETSU. University faculty and staff will co-teach courses with EHS instructors on topics such as electronic etiquette, introduction to the culture of post-secondary education, tools for academic success, and career search and application skills.
“Preparing students for post-secondary success is part of our mission and culture at Elizabethton High School,” said Dr. Jon Minton, EHS principal. “We are excited about this new partnership and extremely grateful to East Tennessee State University for the willingness to acknowledge the efforts of our newly redesigned Cyclone Capstone Course. We cannot wait to see how the course acts as a catalyst for our students who choose to attend ETSU and get a head start as a result of this unique agreement.”
During the day-long immersive experience at ETSU, EHS students will tour campus, learn about student success opportunities, attend a class, interact with current ETSU students, participate in team-building and leadership skills activities, and have lunch in the dining hall.
