JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 25, 2021) – Violinist, educator and composer Christian Howes will perform in a Guest Artist Recital at East Tennessee State University on Friday, Oct. 29.
His performance, sponsored by the ETSU Department of Music, will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Powell Recital Hall of the Martin Center for the Arts.
The concert will feature original compositions by ETSU jazz piano faculty member Michael Jefry Stevens, who will also perform along with Howes.
Howes was voted No. 1 in the Downbeat Critics Poll (“Rising Stars/Violin”), named among the top three jazz violinists in the JazzTimes critics poll and nominated for Violinist of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association. In addition, he received the Residency Partner Award through Chamber Music America and earned a USArtists grant through the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation. He was invited by the U.S. State Department to teach and perform as a cultural ambassador in Ukraine and Montenegro.
Howes’ albums include “Southern Exposure” and “American Spirit,” which was named among the Best Jazz Albums of 2015 by the Huffington Post.
Howes is a musician dedicated to sharing his vision with others. He is the founder of Creative Strings, a non-profit organization with a mission to expand music education through the creation of online curricula, an annual summer conference and dozens of visits to schools annually teaching improvisation, contemporary styles and related subjects.
