(March 26, 2022) The faculty and staff at East Tennessee State University Quillen College of Medicine’s Department of Pediatrics have been busy publishing, writing grants and presenting research:

- Karen Schetzina was awarded a Tennessee Department of Health grant for her project titled “Caring for Motherhood.” The purpose of the $19,971 grant is to continue engaging providers and community members in the region and beyond in maternal mortality prevention education and includes a new podcast series, called “Growing Stronger Together.” The grant will also fund the dissemination of information, tools and resources developed in the “Caring for Motherhood” journal through ETSU Health Clinics, regional care coordination programs, community events and digital media.
- Members of the ETSU Department of Pediatrics faculty, including Darshan S. Shah, Dr. Nathaniel Justice and Dr. David L. Wood, along with Dr. Kara L. Boynewicz of the ETSU Department of Physical Therapy, published an article in the “The Journal of Maternal-Fetal Medicine.” The article explores the impact
of in utero opioid exposure on newborns.
- Two Quillen College of Medical students (pictured above) received travel grants to present at the Southern Society of Pediatric Research (SSPR). Divya Agarwal presented on “Postpartum Mental Health in Opioid Use Disorder Women” and Monika Jain’s presentation was titled “Does Integrated Management of Opioid Use Disorder Affect Outcomes of NAS Diagnosis: Results of Preliminary Data.” Both students were mentored by Dr. Darshan S. Shah.
