JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 31, 2022) – East Tennessee State University’s Creative Writing Society will host TEDxETSU Monday, April 4, at 7 p.m. as the finale to the week-long celebrations of Civility Week and the Festival of Ideas.
The student-led event will feature various TED-like talks and performances that all
share the theme of “Connection.” It will take place in the D.P. Culp Student Center
ballroom, which is located on the third floor of the building. Seating is limited
to 100 people and requires a ticket to attend. Tickets are available and can be picked
up by students with proof of enrollment in the Carrier Center, located on the second
floor of the Culp. A livestream will be provided for overflow in The Cave and is open
to the public.
TEDx is a program of local events designed to initiate nuanced discussions, and create
an atmosphere that enables deep interpersonal connections. While the TEDx programs
are subject to certain rules and regulations per the guidance of the TED Conference,
the events are self-organized.
While there were approximately 60 applications to present at TEDxETSU, only 10 speakers
and four gallery pieces made it through the extensive review process. Although every
presentation falls within a theme, topics vary from the cultural significance of music
and mythology, to the escalating need for humans to co-exist with other inhabitants
of the planet.
“The theme for this TEDx is ‘Connection,’ which makes it the perfect event to tie
together this year’s Civility Week and Festival of Ideas celebrations,” said TEDxETSU
organizer and student Chloe Philpot. “It also serves as a unique opportunity for students
to put themselves in front of the room, and become the educators, performers and leaders
they spend their academic years watching from the crowd.”
