ETSU will screen 1954 classic, ‘White Christmas’
ETSU will screen “White Christmas,” the 1954 classic, in the newly renovated Bud Frank Theater.
East Tennessee State University is doing its part to ignite the holiday spirit in the Appalachian Highlands.
That trend continues on Friday, Dec. 1, when the 1954 musical, “White Christmas,” will be screened at the newly renovated Bud Frank Theater.
The screening starts at 7 p.m.
“We invite the community to visit our campus and enjoy this free screening,” said Dr. Chelsea Wessels, associate professor in the Department of Literature and Language. “This is a fabulous way to get into the holiday spirit and join ETSU as we strive to enrich the Appalachian Highlands through the arts.”
For generations, the Bud Frank Theater was a popular site, holding scores of performances and productions.
Earlier this year, ETSU officials announced that renovations were complete in the theater, promising cultural enrichment to the region.
The theater stands as the only art cinema in the region outside of Asheville, North Carolina.
“This is important, because half of the films released – indeed, half the Oscar contenders – do not play in Northeast Tennessee on initial release,” Dr. Matthew Holtmeier, an associate professor in the Department of Literature and Language, said earlier this year. “We currently live in a cinema desert, but hopefully we will be able to rectify that with the Bud Frank.”
The Dec. 1 event is free and open to the public as part of a soft launch this semester, though an admission fee will likely be charged as the program grows and additional films become available.
ETSU is also home to a vibrant arts community, hosting dozens of concerts, talks and exhibitions each year.
