ETSU honors the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.

On August 28, 1963, Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech to a crowd of over 200,000 people.

On-Campus Events


Several events are scheduled on the campus of East Tennessee State University and throughout the community to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. These events are coordinated by ETSU's Mary V. Day of Service
Monday, January 15 (Due to weather: Postponed until a date TBD in February)

MLK Legacy Program & Cake Cutting
Due to weather, this is rescheduled for Thursday, February 1.


King’s Beloved Community
Due to weather, this event is rescheduled for Tuesday, February 6.

While the university is closed on Monday, January 15, the ETSU Mary V. Jordan Multicultural Center staff and students will gather for a Day of Service at Carver Recreation Center in Johnson City from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

Collaborating with local schools, community centers, leaders, and agencies, join the "Beloved Community: Persevering in Love" activities, community services, Unity Walk, storytelling, and celebration of King’s birthday.

The ETSU Mary V. Jordan Multicultural Center will commemorate events of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at a special program from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the ETSU Foundation Carillon and Alumni Plaza.

Later, there will be a cake-cutting celebration at 1:30 p.m. on the first floor of the D.P. Culp Student Center.

The Multicultural Center invites the community to a Commemoration of “King’s Beloved Community” from 6-7:30 p.m. in the East Tennessee Room, located in ETSU’s D.P. Culp Student Center.
