With harmony and heart, ETSU making children’s stories come to life

O.J. Early April 15, 2024

When East Tennessee State University’s award-winning concert choirs take the stage on Friday, April 19, audience members will be treated to something extra special.

The concert features a collaboration with the Sing Me A Story Foundation. It’s a group that gives children the chance to write or illustrate a story about anything they want. Student songwriters and musicians take it from there, turning the work into a song or choral work.

Julian Rios, an ETSU composition student, set a child’s story to music, and the Chorale will premiere it during the concert.

“The child and the family will be part of the concert,” said Dr. Alan Stevens, chair of the Department of Music. “This finale performance is always incredible, and this addition makes the performance even more wonderful. You won’t want to miss it.”

Three ETSU groups are scheduled to perform:

ETSU Chorale, a well-respected group that has toured the United States and internationally.

BucsWorth tenor bass choir, an award-winning choir that captured a top finish in the 2017 American Prize Competition for University Choirs.

East Tennessee Belles, an excellent soprano alto choir who has performed for the Tennessee Music Education Association.

Tickets are available via the Martin Center Box Office. Purchase them online or call (423) 439-2787.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. at the ETSU Martin Center for the Arts, located at 1320 W. State of Franklin Road. Learn more about the foundation here.
