East Tennessee State University invites the public to the final story slam of the spring semester.Re-Generation Story Slam happens Friday, April 26, at 7:30 p.m. (doors open at 7:00 p.m.) at The Down Home, located at 300 W. Main St in Johnson City.
“Come to listen, come to tell a story of your own,” the event producers said.
The theme for April is “home”. All in attendance are invited, but not required, to put their names into a random drawing to be selected to tell personal stories about that are related in some way to that month’s theme.
“Sharing stories from our lives creates community, whether telling or listening,” ETSU Storytelling Program director Nancy Donoval said. “Laughter or tears, it’s all the stuff of life. Come be transported into other people’s shoes for a night and invite them to walk for a bit in yours.”
Audience members wishing to tell a story will drop their name into a fishbowl, and the MC will draw 10 names randomly.
You will have 5 minutes to tell a story. The story should be true, related to the theme and told, not read.
Your story can be related to the theme in any way that makes sense to you. “Home” can be interpreted just as many ways: childhood homes, yearning for home, being unhomed, creating your first adult home, spaces, places, landscapes and more.
The audience will vote for their favorite story, and the top story gets $50.
There is no admission price, but organizers suggest a $5-$10 donation to help support the event. Adult-themed stories are likely. Presented by the ETSU Storytelling Program, the slams are also made possible by the student organization Storyteller Collective at ETSU, the Department of Communication Studies and Storytelling, and The Down Home.
