Award-winning author Dr. Keisha Blain to headline ETSU conference

East Tennessee State University has announced award-winning author and historian Dr. Keisha Blain as the keynote speaker for the sixth annual Equity & Inclusion Conference. The event, open to the public, will be held Sept. 26-27.
The conference will feature a book signing for Blain’s most recent title, "Wake Up America: Black Women on the Future of Democracy." This collection brings together the voices of major progressive Black women politicians, grassroots activists and intellectuals to offer critical insights on how we can create a more equitable political future.
Blain is also the author of "Set the World on Fire: Black Nationalist Women and the Global Struggle for Freedom," winner of the First Book Award from the Berkshire Conference of Women Historians and winner of the Darlene Clark Hine Award from the Organization of American Historians. She also wrote "Until I Am Free: Fannie Lou Hamer's Enduring Message to America" and edited five other award-winning books.
Blain completed her Ph.D. in History from Princeton University in 2014. She is also a professor of Africana Studies and History at Brown University, a columnist for MSNBC and former president of the African American Intellectual History Society. Blain’s writing has been featured in the Atlantic, the Washington Post, the Guardian, the Nation, Foreign Affairs and more.
The Equity and Inclusion Conference features keynote speakers and presenters from across the country, focusing on topics such as Appalachian identity, culture, race and accessibility. The conference is open to anyone who wishes to attend, with early registration rates available until Sept. 19. Students may register for free and ETSU employees may utilize their education benefits.
