The East Tennessee State University Research Corporation, a world-class collaboration hub for innovation, is committed to developing and commercializing intellectual property with industry partners.

Such an initiative can help drive regional economic growth, fostering job creation and new business opportunities.

In that spirit, the ETSU Research Corporation has named Jon Wood as the new chief intellectual property (IP) officer.

“We are thrilled to have Jon join us in this role,” said David Golden, CEO of the ETSU Research Corporation. “Jon is an internationally recognized innovator with deep IP and strategy development experience across many sectors. He is a gifted educator and negotiator. His thought leadership and wisdom will be extremely beneficial as we continue to grow the impact of the Research Corporation on our campus, the region and beyond.”

Wood holds multiple degrees, including a JD from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and a master’s degree in organic chemistry from the University of Alabama.

An intellectual property attorney, Wood has been a board member of the National Investors Hall of Fame since 2008.

“As we look to strengthen ETSU’s position as a leader in innovation, the development and protection of intellectual property are essential in building sustainable partnerships with industry,” said Dr. Nick Hagemeier, vice provost for Research. “Through initiatives like public-private partnerships, the ETSU Research Corporation is uniquely positioned to bridge the gap between academia and industry, fostering groundbreaking discoveries and their commercialization for societal benefit.”

“I’m excited to join the ETSU Research Corporation and help lead its mission to foster innovation and economic growth through intellectual property development,” said Wood. “By working together with university researchers and industry partners, we can create a dynamic ecosystem that transforms ideas into impactful solutions for the region and beyond.”

The mission of the ETSU Research Corporation, launched in January 2021, is to support research, scholarly and artistic activities at ETSU.

The organization offers its partners access to state-of-the-art business and startup facilities, connections to university and regional experts knowledgeable about government practices, and a community of like-minded innovators for support. Over the years, the ETSU Research Corporation has launched a range of initiatives, including StoryCollab, an innovative platform dedicated to leveraging the power of first-person narrative, and partnerships with industry leaders such as MicroByre Inc., a microbial engineering platform company.

The ETSU Research Corporation invites students, faculty, and staff as well as industry partners to join in advancing intellectual property development. By engaging with the ETSU Research Corporation, the campus community and our region can explore opportunities to contribute to innovation and entrepreneurship, furthering ETSU’s impact on regional and national levels.
