Global Year in Ecuador Interests: I have the pleasure of checking out the culture as both a faculty/staff and student! I am gathering information on a diverse range immersive opportunities for ETSU and Universidad de San Francisco Quito faculty, staff, and students. This includes research, internships, language studies, clinical experiences, laboratory studies, and classroom activities. I am also interested in conducting research for my doctoral in public health epidemiology studies.
Favorite Memory in Ecuador: There are too many! I enjoyed watching the sea lion (AKA "pups of the sea") drama unfold. I also got a good kick out of watching them do human-like things, such as resting on park benches, playing with friends, or sunbathing next to the tourists at the beach.

Dr. Andrew Joyner
Global Year in Ecuador Interests: 1) to identify places to take students and project areas to focus on for next year's (2023) Field Experience class (co-taught with Wil); 2) overhaul Ecological Niche Modeling & Mapping, a graduate geospatial class (GEOS 5300), to focus on species and environments in Ecuador (I shot several new videos that I'll use in the class next year, and I'll probably focus some modeling efforts on the Andean spectacles bear, the Andean condor, the marine iguana, and others)
Favorite Memory in Ecuador: probably finding the worst possible trail to hike on in San Cristobal! We now know for sure something to tell our students next year what not to do.

Dr. Beth O'Connell
Global Year in Ecuador Interests: Research and/or learning about drinking water quality interventions and differences in types of interventions by setting (mountains, urban, coastal, and island) and culture (indigenous, island, and urban communities)
Favorite Memory in Ecuador: Snorkeling in the Galapagos

Dr. Lisa Dunkley
Global Year in Ecuador Interests: I am a part of the Global Year program because I want to bring a cultural experience to students even if they are not able to do an in person visit to another country. I want to develop global partnerships with a common mission for student success, trauma awareness, and cultural competence. This opportunity allows for the communication across cultures organized in such a way to eliminate/decrease cultural communication barriers. This is important for students in and out of the classroom as it provides a broader look on current events and fosters critical thinking skills to contribute a solution to real works issues.
In addition, Global Year has helped to fuel my research interest in trauma informed care in transition aged youth in the community as it relates to service provision. Also, it has opened a global door to examining the experiences of individuals with disabilities and community integration. This ties in to my area of expertise in human services and rehabilitation counseling.
Favorite Memory in Ecuador: One of the best memories of Ecuador is the feeling like I was on top of the world when doing the teleferico experience (a cable car up the mountains). You can see the whole city from there.

Wil Tollefson
Global Year in Ecuador Interests: Ecuador provides an excellent overview of the many processes that shape earth’s landscape, from volcanoes and earthquakes, to glacier, river, and coastal processes, all in an area about the size of Nevada. With ETSU Global year, I am working on developing a special section of Geosciences 1040 – Earth and Society, that will highlight examples of course topics found in Ecuador and related landscapes in the US. Additionally, I am working with Dr. Joyner to develop an Ecuador edition of Geosciences 3700 – Geosciences Field Experience for Spring 2023 where students will also have the opportunity to travel to Ecuador and experience these landscapes in person!
Favorite Memory in Ecuador: For a geography/earth science nerd like myself the trip to Ecuador was full of ‘bucket list’ activities like being on the equator for the March Equinox and snorkeling with sharks and sea lions, but one of my favorite moments was the day-trip to Antisana National Park and seeing the clouds break giving us a full view of the Antisana Volcano, covered in glaciers even though it is only 0.5° south of the equator!
