Quillen appoints Dr. Stephen Geraci as chair of Internal Medicine


JOHNSON CITY (July 2, 2013) – East Tennessee State University’s James H. Quillen College of Medicine has appointed Dr. Stephen Geraci as professor and chair of the ETSU Department of Internal Medicine.

Geraci comes to ETSU from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in Jackson, where he served as professor and vice chairman of internal medicine. A practicing cardiologist, Geraci is board-certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular diseases.

 “I consider it a testament to the Quillen College of Medicine and ETSU that our search resulted in a pool of high-caliber candidates, and among those candidates, Steve Geraci stood out,” said Dr. Philip C. Bagnell, dean. “I’m immensely pleased that he is leading the Department of Internal Medicine. Through Dr. Geraci’s knowledge, his passion for teaching and his leadership skills, I am confident that he will enable a strong department to become stronger.”

Geraci has extensive experience at prestigious institutions in addition to the University of Mississippi School of Medicine, where his other posts included professor of medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine and director of Clinical Research and Faculty Development. He established the faculty development program at University of Mississippi Medical Center and also served five years as chief of medicine at G.V. Montgomery Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Jackson. 

A graduate of Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Geraci completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York. He then entered fellowship training in cardiovascular diseases at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in Houston, and did additional work in critical care medicine at the University of Pittsburgh’s Presbyterian University Hospital.

Geraci then finished an additional two-year fellowship in clinical pharmacology with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration/Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences Cooperative Program in Maryland.

The author of one book and three book chapters, Geraci has published 82 peer-reviewed articles in medical journals. He has been a reviewer for or served on the editorial board of eight national journals, including Chest, the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, the Annals of Internal Medicine, the American Journal of Medicine and Academic Medicine. He is also the assistant editor of Southern Medical Journal.
