JOHNSON CITY (Nov. 18, 2013) – “Must the Winter Come So Soon?” is the theme of the East Tennessee State University Opera Workshop’s fall concert.

Performances of this Winter Opera Scenes program will be Saturday, Nov. 23, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 24, at 3 p.m. in 107 Mathes Hall.

“Many famous operas are set in and around winter, and some are just traditionally performed for the holidays,” said Karen Smith, director of the ETSU Opera Workshop.  “This program will give the audience a chance to experience a number of these operas, both old and new.  The melodies, the voices and the drama will help usher listeners into the beauty of the winter season.”

Selections to be performed come from the operas “Little Women,” “Hansel and Gretel,” “Amahl and the Night Visitors,” “Werther,” “Vanessa,” “The Gift of the Magi” and “Eugene Onegin.”

Tickets are $10 for general admission and $5 for seniors and students with ID and may be purchased in advance at or at the door.   For more information, call the ETSU Department of Music at (423) 439-4276.  For disability accommodations, call the ETSU Office of Disability Services at (423) 439-8346.
