JOHNSON CITY (March 30) – Dr. Fred Alsop, faculty member in East Tennessee State University’s Department of Biological Sciences, is the recipient of the 2016 Paul Hayden Memorial Award given by the Tennessee Environmental Conference.
Alsop has over 50 years of experience as a field naturalist, lecturer, author and teacher. He has published over 100 articles in scientific journals and has had his wildlife photographs in Audubon Magazine, National Geographic and Readers Digest. His books include ”Birds of the Smokies,” “Backyard Birds: A Complete Guide to Attracting, Identifying and Photographing Birds in Your Backyard,” “Smithsonian Birds of North America: Life Histories of more than 930 Species” and “Backyard Birds of America.”
In the award presentation, it was noted that his “environmental passion and knowledge is enthusiastically passed to students and friends to fulfill his goal of helping others to enjoy natural history and resources as much as he does.”
The award is named for the late Paul Hayden, a Tennessee environmental champion who was devoted to the Greene County Soil Conservation District and the Middle Nolichucky Watershed Alliance.
