ETSU receives 2018 Military Friendly designation and gold ranking
Military Friendly designation

JOHNSON CITY (Nov. 29, 2017) – East Tennessee State University has earned the Military Friendly® School designation by Victory Media and appears in the “2018 Guide to Military Friendly® Schools.”

First published in 2009, this guide is provided annually to service members and their families, helping them select the best college, university or trade school to receive the education and training needed to pursue a civilian career.

This is the eighth consecutive year ETSU has earned the Military Friendly® designation. The university also increased its designation from “bronze” to “gold” for public universities with greater than 10,000 students.

In 1946, what was then East Tennessee State College welcomed 250 World War II veterans to campus, and ETSU continues the tradition of serving veterans and their families in pursuing their educational and life goals, according to Col. (Ret.) Tony Banchs, director of Veterans Affairs at ETSU.

ETSU currently has 600 military-affiliated students and is on track to have 1,000 by 2026, a goal set forth by President Brian Noland.

“Our Admissions office has added additional identifying questions to help us pick out military-affiliated students earlier in the process. Upon identification, the office of Veterans Affairs personally reaches out and welcomes them to ETSU and provides them with a list of benefits,” added Banchs.

Military-affiliated students receive priority registration for classes each semester, exclusive access to ETSU’s Veterans Lounge for socializing and studying and the support of the university’s Office of Veterans Affairs. Work study positions are available for students using GI Bill® benefits, as well.

In addition, the ETSU Veterans Affairs Standing Committee, comprised of faculty, staff and student veterans, as well as the Student Veterans of America organization, address veterans’ issues on campus.

Institutions earning the Military Friendly® designation were evaluated using both public data sources and responses from Victory Media’s proprietary survey. More than 1,300 schools participated in the 2018 survey; 849 were awarded with the designation based on survey scores and assessment of the ability to meet thresholds for student retention, graduation, job placement, loan repayment, persistence to degree advancement or transfer, and loan default rates for all students and specifically for student veterans.

In addition to appearing in the “2018 Guide to Military Friendly® Schools,” ETSU is showcased along with other 2018 Military Friendly® schools in special issues of “G.I. Jobs®” and “Military Spouse” magazine and on www.militaryfriendly.com.
