Online human services program ranked among best 25

JOHNSON CITY – The online B.S. degree program in human services at East Tennessee State University has been ranked seventh among the top 25 best online human services programs by the website is an independent organization that provides information on K-12 and higher education institutions.

At ETSU, the program is taught through the Department of Counseling and Human Services in the Clemmer College of Education and is accredited by the Council for Standards in Human Service Educators (CSHSE).

“It is always an honor to gain recognition for our programs, especially at the national level,” said Dr. Janna Scarborough, chair of Counseling and Human Services.  “Joining us in this listing are a number of elite programs across the nation.

“Our program is strong and our faculty bring diverse backgrounds and experiences to the classroom, and our undergraduates include a large percentage of non-traditional students as well as transfer students.”

Scarborough added that each student must complete 350 hours of community service as part of the curriculum.

“Our graduates of the human services program are able to achieve employment in a variety of settings, including social service agencies, non-profits, hospitals, mental health, nursing homes, youth service and community service,” said Dr. Julia Bernard, undergraduate program coordinator for the humans services program.  “In addition, students are prepared for graduate studies in counseling or mental health, non-profit administration and speech pathology as well as rehabilitation, medical or nursing school”

According to, the degree programs were ranked based on quality, types of courses offered, strength of faculty, other rankings, awards, previous success in online instruction and other criteria.
