Dr. Eric Beaumont Receives $2.7 Million R01 Grant from National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute

Eric Beaumont RO1

Eric Beaumont, PhD, recently received a four-year, $2.7 million grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, National Institutes of Health. The project, “Afferent Mechanisms of Vagal Neuromodulation Therapy,” will further study Dr. Beaumont’s preliminary evidence suggesting that signals from the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus contributes to therapeutic efficacy in heart failure.

Dr. Beaumont says, “Vagal nerve stimulation therapy has been approved for three central nervous system disorders, but large patient trials for heart failure have failed despite promising preclinical evidence of success. We propose that appropriate consideration of vagal afferent central transmission is key to designing optimally effective therapeutic protocols for vagal nerve stimulation.”

Dr. Beaumont is the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Education for the Biomedical Science Graduate Program and serves as a Professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences. He is a CIIDI member. Please join us in congratulating him on his new R01 award.
