Following a university-wide restructuring of the General Education program (Final Recommendation Report from the General Education Redesign Task Force (January 26, 2024) the College of Public Health has significantly expanded its offerings that meet the University’s General Education requirements.
The General Education Redesign Task Force, which included Mikki Johnson, from the Department of Community and Behavioral Health, built the redesign holding values as paramount: (1) do what is best for student learning, (2) provide students with greater flexibility and choice, and (3) maintain appropriate academic rigor in the general education program to meet student needs for the 21st century.”
The final program, known as “Compass: General Education for ETSU” included five areas:
- Strengthening Foundations
Understanding Natural and Social Worlds- Exploring Connections
Cultivating Artistic Awareness- Growing as an Individual and Global Citizen
The College’s three pre-existing General Education courses are now part of the new offerings:
- COBH 1010 Lifetime Behaviors for Health Living
- HSCI 2010 & 2020: Anatomy and Physiology I & II (with labs)
- HSCI 2230: Intro to Microbiology (with lab)
In addition, four new courses have been added:
- COBH 1020 Introduction to Public Health
- ENVH 3010 Human Ecology and Environmental Education
- HSMP 2100 Health Systems

“I would like to extend significant thanks to both Ms. Johnson and to all of the faculty who worked so quickly to incorporate these vital courses into the new General Education curriculum,” said Dean Randy Wykoff. “These courses will help expose all students to many of the most important concepts that we teach in all four of our departments that have undergraduate programs.”
