Rotation spotlight: Liz Holder ('23), ETSU Family Physicians of Kingsport

Liz Holder

Meet Liz Holder (’23), from Derby, Kansas. Her rotation experience was at ETSU Family Physicians of Kingsport with Dr. McKenzie Highsmith, preceptor and associate professor of Pharmacy Practice.

What did your day look like on rotation?

Each day we are able to work as an integrated part of the healthcare team. On a typical day, we work with the medical residents to see their patients at the beginning of each visit. We would update medication lists, answer any medication question the patient may have, and provide counseling on new or current medications. On Monday and Fridays we would participate in transitions of care clinic and pharmacy clinic each week as an interprofessional team. We would would go over patient charts and develop a treatment plan for our patients that had recently been discharged from the hospital. The goal of transitions of care is to keep patients out of the hospital!

What did you learn from this experience?

I learned how pharmacists have such an impact on patient health and managing chronic disease states. We were able to explain reasons for medications, how to take medications, and tackle financial barriers that some patients may face. I am so grateful for this learning environment that helped me grow confidence as a future pharmacist!

Why did you choose Gatton?

I chose Gatton because of the family atmosphere! I am so thankful for the friendships and mentorships that I have gained throughout my years here at the college.
