Sharon CradicCongratulations to Ms. Sharon Cradic, University School Elementary and Middle School Physical Education instructor, on receiving the 2011 Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year award for the state of Tennessee! The following article was written by Christy Killman, TAHPERD (Tennessee Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance)past president:

On November 8, 2011 physical education professionals from across the state gathered at the 42nd annual TAHPERD awards luncheon in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.  During this event TAHPERD award winners were recognized.  Among the winners was Sharon Cradic 2011 Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year.  Sharon was nominated by her peers and voted into this position by the TAHPERD awards committee.  This award is rooted at the national level by NASPE (National Association of Sport & Physical Education) and has strenuous criteria.  The nominee must be a member of TAHPERD, NASPE and AAHPERD (American Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance), must be a certified physical education teacher with a full time contract, have a minimum of 5 years teaching experience in physical education and a minimum of 60% of the teaching responsibility in physical education class.

Candidates must answer questions about their philosophy, teaching methodology, professional affiliations and achievements as well as have 3 peers write letters of support on their behalf.  In addition, candidates must prove to be active in their communities.

Sharon, in her application process, proved her worthiness to receive the teacher of the year award.  She is and has been active in the state as an advocate for quality physical education, and serves her profession and TAHPERD in several roles.  Most importantly, Sharon exhibits all the characteristics of a caring, quality teacher as she enthusiastically writes, I love teaching physical education!  It is not just a job for me.  It is my passion!  I believe that a good quality physical education program is essential for our students.

It is my pleasure to support Sharon as she moves on to the next teacher of the year level Southern District.

Congratulations, Sharon Cradic, TAHPERD elementary physical education teacher of the year.
