Meet Dakota Rorie (’23), from Blaine, Tennessee, who experienced a rotation at Johnson City Medical Center with Dr. Kelly Covert, preceptor and Pharmacy Practice faculty member.
What did your day look like on rotation?
We attend night-shift handoff first thing in the morning. Then we work up our patients for the day and present them to Dr. Covert. After reviewing our recommendations with Dr. Covert, we present our recommendations to the family medicine team during table rounds. After the residents and medical students have finished presenting their patients, we go to each floor for rounds, speaking to our patients and giving further recommendations as brought up by the team or as morning labs come in. Finally, we finish up the day by conducting medication reconciliations and completing discharge medication orders to go with patients after discharge. We also answer any questions residents have about our shared patients and give topic discussions on topics that have come up during rounds.
What did you learn from this experience?
This was my first inpatient experience so I learned a lot about the role of a pharmacist on an interprofessional team. I also learned how to speak up for myself during table rounds and how to communicate more effectively with other members of the team to ensure our patients are getting the best care possible.
Why did you choose ETSU pharmacy?
I chose ETSU Gatton College of Pharmacy because they feel like family and have supported me so much as I've grown as a pharmacist and person. The relationships I built have benefitted me both professionally and personally, and I will always be a part of the Gatton family.
