The University Career Services Office shares a mutual goal with faculty in every college and department. We all want our students to be successful. Working together, we can help to ensure that the transition from student life to work or graduate school is as seamless as possible.
Our faculty does an outstanding job of transmitting the knowledge, skills and information our graduates will need to thrive once they reach their destination. Regardless of student major or the department in which you teach, you provide students the opportunity to develop the attributes employers care about. Consider for a moment the skills and characteristics employers look for when making hiring decisions about new graduates. Based on survey research and direct feedback, the following top the list:
- Communication and interpersonal skills
- Initiative and work ethic (most often based on resume content, understanding of job requirements and researching the company before the interview)
- Ability to work well in teams
- Critical thinking and analytical skills
- Flexibility (ability to adapt to employer needs)
- Computer and technical skills
These attributes do not belong to a particular major. They are cross-disciplinary and relate to the growth and development students experience in many classes and activities during their years at ETSU.
At University Career Services, our goal is to help students develop the specific skills and materials they will need to convey their value to a prospective employer. Naturally, this includes the things we all think about like resumes, cover letters, researching employers and job opportunities and preparing for the interview. We also help students understand job search requirements and effective communications with employers.
How can we work together to ensure that our students have what they need to achieve at their highest level of ability? Two basic actions are referral and outreach. We welcome students to our office at any time and are happy to schedule class presentations when they best fit your schedule.
To refer a student or class to University Career Services, please contact us. We are always available to work with students, and welcome the opportunity to talk with classes at a time that fits your syllabus and schedule.
If you advise a club or organization on campus, we are also pleased to present a program for them, tailored to their needs and interests. Call us at 439-4450 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org to make your request. Please visit us in the ARC Center on the second floor of the D. P. Culp University Center.
