The location and the type of housing you choose contributes a great deal to your overall environmental footprint. Whether you're in campus housing or living off-campus, you can have a positive impact on the environment by taking a few things into consideration:


Off-Campus Housing Tips:

Look for housing near a bus or shuttle stop

Within walking/biking distance of grocery and convenience stores

Within  walking/biking distance of your primary work or school location

Double-planed windows

Well-insulated shell

Carefully sealed air ducts

Tankless or high efficiency water heater

Energy efficient appliances (refrigerator, microwave, washer, dryer)

Digital, programmable thermostat

No or low-volatile organic compound (VOC) paint

On-Campus Housing Tips:

Buy appliances with the Energy Star label

Use CFL or LED light bulbs in secondary lighting, which use much less energy than incandescent bulbs

Coordinate with your roommates so you don't purchase excess furniture, appliances, lights

Donate items to local charities during Campus Move-Out at the end of the spring semester
