Governor’s School
Medical Museum at Mountain Home
The Medical Museum at Mountain Home introduces students to the history of medicine within both a regional and national context. Located on the historic grounds of the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center, the museum preserves and interprets the development of medical practices, with particular attention to the care of veterans and the evolution of healthcare in the United States.
Through its exhibits, students encounter medical instruments, hospital artifacts, and archival materials that trace changes in diagnosis, treatment, and patient care over time. These collections provide insight into how medical knowledge has advanced, as well as how social, technological, and institutional factors have shaped healthcare systems.
The museum also highlights the human dimension of medical history, emphasizing the experiences of patients and practitioners. In particular, it offers a perspective on the role of government institutions in providing care, especially in the context of veteran services, and how these systems have developed in response to broader historical events.
As part of the Governor’s School program, this visit encourages students to consider the intersections of science, history, and society. It reinforces themes of change over time, the impact of innovation, and the ways in which institutions respond to human needs, adding an important dimension to the program’s exploration of history and environment.
