Governor's School
Rocky Fork
Rocky Fork State Park provides students with the opportunity to engage directly with one of the most ecologically rich and relatively undisturbed landscapes in East Tennessee. Located in the southern Appalachian Mountains, the park is characterized by dense forest, steep terrain, and a network of clear, fast-moving streams that support a wide range of plant and animal life.
As part of the Governor’s School experience, students conduct aquatic environmental investigations within these stream systems. Through guided observation and field-based study, they examine water quality, habitat structure, and biodiversity, often using snorkeling to observe aquatic life in its natural setting. This immersive approach allows students to study fish, macroinvertebrates, and stream dynamics firsthand, reinforcing key concepts related to watershed health and ecosystem function.
Rocky Fork is also notable for its connection to East Tennessee State University. ETSU played a collaborative role in the park’s establishment and early planning, with representation on the Rocky Fork State Park steering committee during its formative stages. Faculty and students contributed foundational scientific research on the tract’s biodiversity, including a comprehensive vertebrate survey that documented over 100 species and established baseline ecological data for the area. This work helped demonstrate the environmental significance of the site and supported efforts to preserve it as a protected landscape.
The park continues to serve as an important site for research and education. ETSU researchers remain involved in ecological studies, including work in partnership with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency to develop best practices for studying and handling local species such as salamanders. Students have contributed through volunteer efforts, assisting with trail construction and participating in service-learning projects that connect environmental study with community engagement.
As part of the Governor’s School program, Rocky Fork State Park brings together environmental science, conservation, and experiential learning. It allows students to work within a living ecosystem while also understanding the role that research, advocacy, and collaboration play in preserving natural spaces.
