How to Get Involved
- The CARE lab regularly recruits new undergraduate or post-bac research assistants for two-semester lab commitments ranging from 5-10 hours per week.
- Research assistants have the opportunity to get involved in a variety of activities,
including:
- literature reviews
- data entry
- transcribing of audio- or video-recorded content
- in-person or virtual data collection with people involved in the legal system and/or legal system staff
- The CARE lab also hires certified peer recovery specialists (https://cprs.tn.gov/home) to assist with current projects involving collaboration with local jails and probation agencies
- Peer specialists have the opportunity to get involved in a variety of activities,
including:
- In-person peer support work in local detention facilities, including offering support groups, helping connect individuals to treatment, helping with transportation assistance/other reentry needs, and more
- Collaboration with local treatment and recovery support agencies
- Assistance with tracking outcomes for clinical research studies

Research assistants must meet the following qualifications:
- 3.5 GPA or higher
- Highly motivated to engage in research
- Plans to apply to graduate school (preference given to those applying to PhD programs)
- Flexible availability during business hours
- Ability to commit to at least two semesters in the lab
- Appropriate interpersonal skills and professionalism
- Ability to sign up for Independent Study credit hours (PSYC 4900)
- Have your own transportation and ability to pass abackground check (if collecting data in the jail)
Peer specialists must meet the following qualifications:
- Certification as a Certificed Peer Recovery Specialist or eligible to become certified (preference will be given to those with criminal justice certification) in the state of Tennessee
- Highly motivated to engage in research
- All peer specialists working in the jail must also be approved by the detention facility
