CSCI 1100 - Using Information Technology

Meeting ETSU's information technology proficiency requirement

As a condition for graduating from ETSU, students must demonstrate proficiency in information technology including basic computer skills. Completing CSCI 1100 is one means of meeting this requirement.

CSCI 1100, Using Information Technology, provides students with a working knowledge of

  • word processing
  • spreadsheets
  • presentation software
  • electronic communication online database searching
  • strategies for protecting personal assets and privacy online
  • skills necessary to integrate electronic information

CSCI 1100 is offered every semester, including summer semesters.

Beginning Fall 2024

CSCI 1100 is being redesigned to create an exciting experience for all students.The course is drastically shifting the focus away from teaching and learning tools and toward learning about the information technology topics that are highly relevant in today's society. These topics will include digital and data literacy, Cyber Security and Privacy, The Connected World (Networking), Digital Content Creation and Usage, Digital Citizenship, Using AI to Solve Problems, and cutting edge topics that are just emerging!

As a result, students who take CSCI 1100 - Using Information Technology in Fall 2024 and beyond must register for CSCI 1150 - Using Information Technology Lab. The lecture portion of the course will give an exciting overview of these topics from dynamic instructors and speakers. The 0-credit-hour lab will allow you to explore the topics discussed during the Lecture in a Laboratory setting working with a qualified lab instructor.
