In Rhetorical Traditions and the Teaching of Writing, Knoblauch and Brannon observe that "The natural tendency of discourse is to explore, to progress from what is known to what is not yet known.” The evening event will provide an opportunity to expand the discourse about trauma-informed practice in higher education beyond our own classrooms, departments, and disciplinary borders. “How will I use my voice?” is the key question we will explore as we share and shape conversation about what it means to be trauma-informed in higher education.
Questions for all participants to explore:
- What led to my interest in trauma-informed care?
- What does it mean to me to be trauma-informed?
- How will I use my voice in educational spaces, literally and figuratively?
- How will I amplify the voices of others?
- How do I help further discourse about trauma-informed care in higher education?

Monday, January 11, 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (ET)
Faculty, staff, administrators, and teaching assistants are invited to participate in a series of conversations and interactive workshop sessions around ways we can literally and figuratively use our voices to create spaces for trauma-informed care (TIC) in our classrooms, offices, and college community. Participants will be provided with extensive resources and will have opportunities to engage in a variety of optional pre, post, and in-session assessments and writing activities.
Welcome and introductions
9:00 a.m.
Session 1: Creating a Common Language
9:15 a.m. - 10:15 a.m.
During the session, facilitators will introduce trauma-informed approaches in higher education. Participants will learn the basic tenants of trauma-informed approaches, discover the importance of trauma-informed practice, and see examples trauma-informed approaches in action.
What to expect: Mostly didactic with informal polls and brief discussion
Take away: Learn the language of trauma-informed care and the fundamentals of trauma-informed practice in higher education
Session 2: Creating a Trauma-Informed Climate
10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
During the session, participants will practice communication skills designed to foster trauma-informed class and office environments that are conducive to learning and growth.
What to expect: A short introduction to trauma-informed communication principles followed by discussion and coaching.
Take away: Practice scenarios to better understand and apply the principles
BREAK FOR LUNCH
Session 3: Creating Trauma-Informed Learning Environments
1:00 P.M. - 2:30 P.M.
During the session, participants will explore authority styles and their congruence with trauma-informed practice. Participants will discuss specific educational practices and policies from the authority styles activity in order to inform their own practice and aid in the development of best practices.
What to expect: Highly interactive. Includes breakout rooms to facilitate small group discussion as well as large-group report-outs

Session 4: Creating Space for Self-Care
2:45 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
During the session, participants will explore strategies to recognize and reduce our own and others’ stress and to enhance our own and others’ learning and well-being. Resources will be provided to create personalized plans for self-care first aid and for self-care maintenance.
What to expect: Didactic instruction and interactive discussion. Participants complete individual activities for implementing practice

Session 5: Creating Time for Reflection
3:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
This session provides an opportunity to gather and reflect upon our experiences during the Institute, create an action plan, and share our best hopes for future collaboration.

Take away: Create an action plan for the start of spring semester
