Warm Up With The Arts At ETSU (2 minute read)

Ahead of a sold-out performance last year, the chair of East Tennessee State University’s Department of Theatre and Dance reflected on the impact the arts have on a community.  

“The arts,” said Karen Brewster, “help us make sense of what is happening in the world.”  

ETSU is home to a thriving creative community, with dozens of events happening on campus. And as cold weather sets in, take advantage of the performances happening over the next couple of months.  

Department of Music 


  • Jan. 23: A special performance by the skilled trombonist Justin Cook. 


  • Jan. 26: Sun-Joo Oh collaborates in an enchanting recital. 

  • Feb. 4: Unique flute duet by Roya Farzaneh and Nancy Scheeloch-Bingham; also a captivating student trumpet performance. 

  • Feb. 5: A string recital showcasing ETSU faculty's talents. 

  • Feb. 8: Quintesax gives a saxophone recital. 

  • Feb. 10: Pianist Jeremi Lukanus’s eagerly awaited recital. 

  • Feb. 19: A stellar performance by guest artist Yu Tamaki. 

  • Feb. 20: Tuba, euphonium and trombone ensembles take the stage. 

  • Feb. 22: Trumpet ensembles recital. 

  • Feb. 24: Woodwind Day and Brass Day, featuring performances and classes. 

Department of Theatre and Dance  

  • Jan. 21: The award-winning play, "Nancy."  
  • Jan. 25: The Basler Chair of Excellence Welcome Address for Dr. Carol Novella (2 p.m., D.P. Culp Student Center).  
  • Feb. 22-25: ETSU students present “Eurydice” by Sarah Ruhl.

  • Through Feb. 9: "What Does it All Mean?" by Jonathon Strube, with a closing reception on Feb. 8.  



  • Starting Jan. 29: MFA Exhibition by Akintayo Akintobi, with a reception on Feb. 2.

  • From Feb. 12: The Positive/Negative 39 National Juried Art Exhibition at Slocumb Galleries; Brad Owens's exhibition, with a reception on Feb. 23, at Tipton Gallery. 

  • Starting Feb. 26: MFA exhibition by Ben Conley, with a reception March 1.  

Martin Center for the Arts 

  • Jan. 18: The Black Jacket Symphony presents Journey’s “Escape.” 

  • Feb. 2: The legendary Three Dog Night in concert. 

  • Feb. 6-7: “Shen Yun” brings classical Chinese culture to life. 

  • Feb. 12-13: The acclaimed musical “My Fair Lady.” 
  • Feb. 15: Larry Fleet, featuring Dalton Dover, in a soulful performance.
  • Feb. 19: Amythyst Kiah and ETSU Old-Time Ramblers perform.

  • Feb. 12: Three Emerging Writers Event featuring Halle Hill, Anna Laura Reeve and Annie Woodford at the Reece Museum.

  • Starting Jan. 15: Embodying Culture: Women in Appalachia begins. 

  • Through Feb. 17: The Balladeer Children’s Program, in partnership with Ballad Health.

  • Feb. 3: The Umoja Festival’s concert, featuring Sunshine Anderson and Rico Parkay.

Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program


Feb. 7: Dr. Kate Beatty will speak during the Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies on Wednesdays.
