ETSU hosting variety of arts and other events in November
The leaves continue to fall, the weather turns cooler, and the holidays and the end of the fall semester draw ever closer. But the East Tennessee State University campus stays abuzz with activity throughout the month of November!
The following listing includes events that are open to the public and are free unless otherwise noted:
Music
Guest Artist Recital: Flutist Ziqing Guan
November 6, 7:30 p.m. – Martin Center for the Arts, Powell Recital Hall
Originally from Guangzhou, China, this award-winning flutist is a dedicated and passionate
music educator who has taught at the University of South Carolina and the Interlochen
Arts Camp in Michigan.
CANCELLED - Guest Artist Double-Reed Recital: Jason Wrozbyt
November 7, 7:30 p.m. – Martin Center for the Arts, Powell Recital Hall
Dr. Jason Wrozbyt is professor of bassoon and associate director of bands at Indiana
University of Pennsylvania.
SPANKthe80s Live!
November 8, 7:30 p.m. – Martin Center for the Arts, ETSU Foundation Grand Hall
The nation’s premiere 80s tribute band recreates the sounds, styles and vibe of that
decade with hits from Michael Jackson, Prince, Bon Jovi, Journey and more. Tickets are $41.06.
Guest Artist Recital: Pianist Kirill Gliadkovsky
November 9, 7:30 p.m. – Martin Center for the Arts, Powell Recital Hall
Since making his first public appearance in Moscow at the age of 6, this pianist has
toured extensively on three continents. He teaches at Saddleback College.
Appalachian Square Dance
November 13, 7-9 p.m. – Down Home, 300 W. Main Street, Johnson City
ETSU’s Department of Appalachian Studies hosts a family-friendly, fun-for-all evening
of square dance, with live music provided by the Old-Time Bands in the Bluegrass,
Old-Time and Roots Music Studies program. Each dance is taught and called throughout
its entirety.
Closing Bands Concert - NOTE TIME CHANGE
November 17, 3 p.m. – Martin Center for the Arts, ETSU Foundation Grand Hall
The ETSU Wind Ensemble and Concert Band will perform a mix of instrumental repertoire
ranging from traditional to contemporary genres in their final concert of the fall
semester.
SGA Fall Major Concert
November 19, 7 p.m. – Freedom Hall Civic Center
The Driver Era, Echosmith and Lisa Heller will perform a variety of pop and indie

plus tax.
Guest Artist Recital: Pianist Gergely Kovacs
November 20, 7:30 p.m. – Martin Center for the Arts, Powell Recital Hall
Dr. Gergely Kovacs is on the faculty of Adam Gyorgy Castle Academy in New York and
holds his own master classes in Hungary and abroad.
ETSU BLUE Singer-Songwriter Showcase
November 22, 7 p.m. – Martin Center for the Arts, Powell Recital Hall
Students studying songwriting this semester in ETSU’s Bluegrass, Old-Time and Roots
Music Studies program will share their original works. The program will also be livestreamed
on the program’s Facebook page.
ETSU Jazz Ensemble Concert
November 22, 7:30 p.m. – Martin Center for the Arts, ETSU Foundation Grand Hall
The ETSU Jazz Ensemble presents its major concert of the fall semester.
NYC Send-off for the Marching Bucs
November 24, 10:45 p.m. – Front lawn of University School
Join us in giving the Marching Bucs a warm send-off as they head to New York City
to perform in the 2024 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Signs of support and noisemakers
are welcome.

Bud Frank Cinema: ‘Muxes’

The Bud Frank Cinema, Mountain Interstate Foreign Language Conference and Slocumb
Galleries present a free screening of “Muxes: The Language of Art and Cultures.”
Bud Frank Cinema x Film Farm: ‘Paris, Texas’

ETSU’s Bud Frank Cinema presents this 40th anniversary screening of “Paris, Texas.”
Bud Frank Cinema: ‘Mickey’s Christmas Carol’
November 18, two showings at 6:30 and 7:15 p.m. – Bud Frank Theatre, Gilbreath Hall
As part of the ETSU Holiday Lights Celebration, the Bud Frank Cinema presents two
free screenings of “Mickey’s Christmas Carol,” in which Mickey, Goofy, Donald and
other beloved Disney characters bring Charles Dickens’ unforgettable holiday tale
to life.
ETSU Theatre and Dance: ‘Cabaret: The Musical’
November 20-23, 7:30 p.m., and November 24, 2 p.m. – Martin Center for the Arts, Bert
C. Bach Theatre
From Concord Theatricals: “In a Berlin nightclub, as the 1920s draw to a close, a
garish Master of Ceremonies welcomes the audience and assures them they will forget
all their troubles at the Cabaret….‘Cabaret’ explores the dark, heady and tumultuous
life of Berlin’s natives and expatriates as Germany slowly yields to the emerging
Third Reich.” Tickets are $15-$30.
‘NUTCRACKER! Magical Christmas Ballet’
November 26, 7 p.m. – Martin Center for the Arts, ETSU Foundation Grand Hall
This favorite Christmas tradition comes to the Martin Center with an international
all-star cast that blends world-class ballet with whimsical puppets, lavish costumes
and stunning acrobatics in the performance of this timeless score by Tchaikovsky.
Tickets are $31-$180.
Fine Arts
‘Posters for Peace’ Exhibit
November 11-22, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays – Slocumb Galleries
This exhibition features posters – “the medium of choice to communicate matters of
urgency and social change” – by U.S. and international artists from the U.S., Iran,
Mexico, China and Denmark. A reception and community talk will be held November 12
at 5 p.m., and a talk by Pasaj Cultural Arts Collaborative Director Pouya Jahanshahi
via Zoom on November 21.
‘FL3TCH3R Exhibit: Social and Politically Engaged Art’
Continuing through December 6, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday – Reece Museum
This annual exhibit, renowned for its exploration of contemporary social and political
movements, features a diverse array of artworks addressing pressing global issues.
A juror talk, award ceremony and reception will be held Thursday, November 7, starting
at 5 p.m.
‘Best of Tennessee Craft: Northeast’
Continuing through November 22 – Tipton Gallery, 126 Spring Street, Johnson City
This exhibit includes works by master craft artists from throughout the Northeast
Tennessee region. A First Friday reception and gallery talk will be held November
1 from 6-8 p.m.
‘Stitch Together: The Social Seamstress in Southern Appalachia’
Continuing through January 10, 2025, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday – Reece Museum
The Reece Museum hosts this exhibit exploring the social connections of seamstresses
by showcasing the fashion and clothing of the museum’s permanent collection.
Lectures and More
3 Minute Thesis Competition
November 6, 4:30 p.m. – D.P. Culp Student Center, Martha Street Culp Auditorium
Curious about the research ETSU’s grad students are doing? Come to the 3MT® competition,
in which graduate students distill their projects into engaging, three-minute presentations
designed for a general audience using just one slide.
ETSU Family Weekend
November 8-10
Families of ETSU students are invited to visit their student(s), stay connected to
ETSU and explore all that Johnson City has to offer during a fun-filled weekend of
events. Registration ranges from $25-$70.
Veterans Day Ceremony
November 15, 3:45 p.m. – Veterans Memorial, located on the Quad behind Gilbreath Hall
ETSU’s Department of Military Science hosts this annual ceremony honoring the nation’s
military veterans. Col. Matt Skaggs will be the guest speaker. All veteran and military
service members are invited to enjoy a free lunch before the ceremony at the ETSU Dining Hall.
Holiday Lights Celebration
November 18, 5:45 p.m. – ETSU Foundation Carillon and Alumni Plaza
The community is invited to join ETSU President Dr. Brian Noland, SGA President Hunter
Turgeon and Bucky as they celebrate the start of the holiday season and turn on the
campus Holiday Lights. The event includes music by the ETSU Jazz Ensemble, refreshments
and the grand opening of the ETSU Skating Rink, in partnership with Brightspeed.
