Curricular Program Requirements

Admitted students may choose any major at ETSU. To successfully complete the Quillen Honors Scholars program and, for five scholars, gain automatic acceptance to the Quillen College of Medicine, all QHS scholars must complete the following program requirements:

 

All QHS Scholars Must:

  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • Maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher in QHS science/social science courses
  • Complete all major program of study requirements (variable credits)

QHS Honors Requirements (15 semester hours):

  • CHNG 1008, Johnson City: From Exploration to Impact (fall of first year), 3 semester hours
  • ANTH 2020, Medical and Health Humanities (spring of first year), 3 semester hours
  • ANTH 4410, Intl. Field Experience: Medical Humanities (summer after first year), 3 semester hours
  • ANTH 3070, Medical Anthropology (fall of Sophomore year), 3 semester hours
  • ANTH 4018, QHS Capstone Project (generally taken spring of Junior year), 3 semester hours

QHS Science/Social Science Requirements (43 semester hours):

  • General Biology I & II (8 credits)*
  • General Chemistry I & II (8 credits)
  • Organic Chemistry I & II (10 credits)
  • Physics I & II (8 credits)
  • Biochemistry (3 credits)
  • Psychology and Sociology (6 credits)*

 

Co-Curricular Program Requirements:

The QHS program seeks to prepare students to become successful physicians by completing a series of co-curricular professional development activities. 

  • Participate in the Honors Living-Learning Community in years one and two
  • MedEx Training
  • Study abroad experience after year one
  • Shadowing, internship, or similar medically related experience in summer after years two and three
  • One-on-One (or Cohort) meeting with Quillen admissions dean and/or assistant dean each year to discuss preparedness for QCOM 
  • Research/Capstone preparation in year three
  • Research/Capstone project completion and defense in year four

Guaranteed Interview at Quillen

Quillen Honors Scholars admitted to the cohort without guaranteed admission to QCOM who meet the following requirements at the time of application to QCOM, whether for admission directly after completing the bachelor’s degree or after completion of the bachelor’s degree and no more than two gap years, will be guaranteed one invitation to interview at QCOM provided the following criteria are met:

  • Apply to QCOM via AMCAS.
  • Achieve an MCAT score of at least 507.
  • Attain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5.
  • Attain a GPA of at least 3.5 in these courses:

General Biology I & II (8 credits)

General Chemistry I & II (8 credits)

Organic Chemistry I & II (10 credits)

Physics I & II (8 credits)

Biochemistry (3 credits)

Psychology and Sociology (6 credits)

  • Complete these QHS program course requirements:

Johnson City: Exploration to Impact (3 credits)

Medical and Health Humanities (3 credits)

Intl. Field Experience: Medical Humanities (3 credits)

Medical Anthropology (3 credits)

QHS Capstone Project (3 credits)

*Fulfills ETSU General Education Requirements
