Quillen Honors Scholars

Program Requirements

Admitted students may choose any major at ETSU. To successfully complete the Quillen Honors Scholars program and, for five scholars, gain automatic acceptance to the Quillen College of Medicine, all QHS scholars must complete the following program requirements:

 

All QHS Scholars Must:

  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • Maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher in QHS premed science/social science courses
  • Complete all major program of study requirements (variable credits)
  • Complete 75 service hours per semester of enrollment
  • Participate in QHS co-curricular activities, outlined below

QHS Honors Requirements (15 semester hours):

  • CHNG 1008, Johnson City: From Exploration to Impact (fall of first year), 3 semester hours
  • ANTH 2020, Medical and Health Humanities (spring of first year), 3 semester hours
  • ANTH 4410, Intl. Field Experience: Medical Humanities (summer after first year), 3 semester hours
  • ANTH 3070, Medical Anthropology (fall of Sophomore year), 3 semester hours
  • ANTH 4018, QHS Capstone Project (generally taken spring of Junior year), 3 semester hours

QHS Premed Science/Social Science Requirements:

  • General Biology I & II (8 credits)
  • General Chemistry I & II (8 credits)
  • Organic Chemistry I & II (10 credits)
  • General Physics I & II (8 credits)
  • Biochemistry (3-4 credits, depending on course chosen)
  • Anatomy (3-4 credits, depending on course chosen) Applies to students who enter Fall 2026 or later
  • Intro Psychology and Intro Sociology (6 credits)
Important: Students with guaranteed admission to QCOM must complete the requirements above by the end of the third year of undergraduate enrollment.

 

Co-Curricular Program Requirements:

The QHS program seeks to prepare students to become successful physicians by completing a series of co-curricular professional development activities. 

  • Participate in the Honors Living-Learning Community in years one and two
  • MedEx Training (required for Medical Horizons; Ballad Health)
  • Study abroad experience after year one
  • Shadowing, internship, Medical Horizons, or similar medical enrichment experience in summer after years two and three
  • One-on-One (or Cohort) meeting with Quillen admissions associate dean each year to discuss preparedness for QCOM
  • One-on-one meeting with the QHS program director at least once a semester 
  • 150 hours of service per year of enrollment in the program (details here)
  • Research/Capstone project in year three
  • Summer research experience at Quillen at least once (applies to students who enter Fall 2026 or later)
  • Participate in all-cohort meetings (two per year)
  • Participate in QHS program events (December banquet, Interview Day, 5K, etc.)
  • Participate in the QHS Common Read (attend at least two common read meetings per year). The common read will be announced by September 15th of each year.

Guaranteed Interview at Quillen

Quillen Honors Scholars admitted to the cohort without guaranteed admission to QCOM who meet the following requirements at the time of application to QCOM, whether for admission directly after completing the bachelor’s degree or after completion of the bachelor’s degree and no more than two gap years, will be guaranteed one invitation to interview at QCOM provided the following criteria are met:

  • Apply to QCOM via AMCAS.
  • Achieve an MCAT score of at least 497.
  • Attain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5.
  • Attain a GPA of at least 3.5 in these courses:

General Biology I & II (8 credits)

General Chemistry I & II (8 credits)

Organic Chemistry I & II (10 credits)

Physics I & II (8 credits)

Biochemistry (3-4 credits)

Anatomy (3-4 credits) Applies to students who enter Fall 2026 or after

Intro Psychology and Intro Sociology (6 credits)

  • Complete these QHS program course requirements:

Johnson City: Exploration to Impact (3 credits)

Medical and Health Humanities (3 credits)

Intl. Field Experience: Medical Humanities (3 credits)

Medical Anthropology (3 credits)

QHS Capstone Project (3 credits)
