Critical Windows Patch - July 8-9, 2021

What is it?

• PrintNightmare

  Microsoft has identified a critical flaw in the Windows Print Spooler service. This vulnerability has been labeled "PrintNightmare" and allows attackers to use remote code executiion that could potentially allow an attacker to install programs, modify data, or create new accounts with full administrative rights. 
• Emergency Patch

  Microsoft has issued an emergency patch to fix the vulnerability. ITS has installed the patch on a subset of computers to test for adverse effects or unexpected issues. This internal deployment has been successful and ITS is prepared to install the patch on all ETSU computers and laptops running the Microsoft Windows Operating system.
• Critical Timing

  This vulnerability is not difficult for attackers to exploit, and timing is critical to ensure ETSU systems are updated and protected. 

Emergency Updates

• What should I expect on my campus computer?

  The patch has deployed and is available for individuals to download and install now. If the computer has not been updated by 11:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 8, ITS will automatically download and install the update on your computer. Your computer will restart once the update is complete so it is recommended that you close any open programs and save any documents before leaving your workspace for the day.
• Can I install the update now?

  If you would like to install the update yourself, you can access the software on your computer at any time. Enter Software Center in the search box next to the start button or Windows icon on your computer. The Software Center app should appear as an option in your search results. When the application opens, select Updates from the options on the left side. The version number may be different for your computer, but you should see something resembling the following image.
  
  
  

  You may see other available updates, but this critical update is labeled "2021-07 Cumulative Update for Windows". Click Install All to begin the process. You will be prompted when the system is ready to restart. You may select to restart the computer now or select Snooze to delay while you save any documents or close any open programs.

  

   

• Automatic Installation

  If you do not take any action, your computer will receive the installation file and begin the updating process at 11:00 p.m. on July 8. Your computer will restart as part of process so it is recommeneded that you save any open documents and close any open programs before leaving your workspace for the day. 
• What if my computer is turned off during the update time?

  Your computer will automatically check for updates shortly after the computer is turned back on. The computer will receive the update and begin the installation process shortly after you log on. You will see a notice when the system is ready to restart indicating the time before restart. You should save any open documents and close and open programs before selecting to restart your computer. The timer will count down 15 minutes before automatically restarting.
• What should I do to update equipment that is not on campus?

  If you have ETSU equipment that is not on campus, you will need to initiate Windows updates yourself through the Microsoft website. You can find detailed instructions on the ITS Self-Service Portal.

  It is strongly recommended that you also update any personal devices at this time.

Computer labs and classroom computers

ITS will automatically download and install the patch on all classroom and lab computers at 11:00 p.m. on Friday, July 9, 2021. No action is required from faculty teaching in these rooms.
