Bluegrass, Old-Time, and Roots Music Program

The Bluegrass, Old-Time, and Roots Music Studies program began in 1982 with the mission to bridge cultural connections between students and traditional music. That initiative soon blossomed into a prominent academic program that expanded its focus to include Scottish, Irish, old-time, and country music, as well as offering courses in music production and management. It helped spark a renaissance of traditional Appalachian music, with students performing at prestigious venues and receiving numerous awards, including Grammys and International Bluegrass Music Association honors. Today, the program continues to attract students worldwide, with its influence enduring in both academic and cultural spheres.

Requirements:

The Bachalor of Arts in Bluegrass, Old-Time, and Roots Music Studies requires 120 credits, including the selection of a 27 credit focus:

Scottish & Irish Traditional Music

The Scottish & Irish Traditional Music focus offers an in-depth exploration of the melodies, rhythms, and storytelling traditions that have shaped the musical landscapes of Ireland and Scotland for centuries. You’ll gain a deep understanding of the cultural significance of the music, exploring its role in social gatherings, celebrations, and storytelling. Our expert instructors, deeply rooted in the traditions of these Celtic cultures, will guide you through both historical and contemporary approaches to the music, helping you connect with the soul of these time-honored traditions.

This program emphasizes the cultural context that makes Irish and Scottish music so powerful and enduring, and explores its impact on Appalachian communities and traditions. You will have the opportunity to participating in group performances, cultural exchanges, and regional festivals that celebrate these traditions. Through collaboration with fellow students and local musicians, you will gain a deeper appreciation for the rich tapestry of folklore, dance, and social life that defines the Irish and Scottish musical experience.   • Fully Accredited Program
    The Bachelor of Arts in Bluegrass, Old-Time, and Roots Music Studies, offered by East Tennessee State University, is one of the few bluegrass programs that is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). Though it is the oldest program of its kind, it is a major that focuses on the Appalachian region and culture. Thus, it is not included in East Tennessee State University's music accreditation with the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). In spite of this, the program has consistently produced award-winning musicians since its inception, and the number of honors received by the program's alumni has only increased in the past few years.
