The SCE integrates suppliers, manufacturers, third-party service providers, financiers, R&D laboratories, business incubators, universities, and government entities within a geographic region to bring innovative products and services to the global market. The Appalachian Highlands SCE has experienced significant growth and development over the last several decades. The region is characterized by anchor firms that promote the propagation of small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), fostering innovation and creating new markets. The success of the SCE relies on homegrown innovation, shared supply chain knowledge and expertise, collaboration across various entities (and types of entities), adoption of advanced supply chain technology, and the sophistication of third-party service providers. Large manufacturers and service providers are at the forefront, driving supply chain innovations and collaborations that enhance the regional ecosystem. Their advanced manufacturing, research, and development investments are pivotal to the area's economic growth. There has also been a marked expansion of logistics infrastructure to support this growth.
