1LT Daniel Lee “Danny” Mullins was born on October 21, 1943, in Jenkins, Kentucky, and later moved to Pound, Virginia. He graduated from Pound High School in 1962, excelling in football as an all-District half-back. Danny attended the Virginia Military Institute before transferring to East Tennessee State University. 1LT Mullins played football and was in the East Tennessee State Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program. 1LT Mullins excelled in the ROTC program and was promoted to ROTC Cadet Lieutenant Colonel and Commander of the 4th Battalion. His senior year he received the Outstanding Battalion Commander award. Daniel was also a Drill Master and a member of the elite Scabbard & Blade, a team that only the top 10% can be considered for.
He graduated from ETSU in 1966 with a degree in History and was a Pi Kappa Alpha,
Epsilon Zeta Chapter Fraternity member. Daniel was commissioned into the United States
Army as a 2nd Lieutenant on 26 August 1966.
LT Mullins served as the Armored Reconnaissance Unit Commander K Troop, 3rd Squadron,
11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in Vietnam. On August 30th, 1967, he was critically
wounded while assisting injured soldiers after a mine explosion. He died the next
day, at 23 years old.
LT Mullins received the Bronze Star with V Device, Purple Heart, National Defense,
Vietnam Service, Vietnam Campaign, and the Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm for his
service and sacrifice to our nation. He is interred at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens
in Virginia and commemorated on the Vietnam Memorial Wall.
