An Accessible Pathway to Surveying

Qualified surveying professionals remain in demand, regionally and beyond. Tennessee requires candidates to complete surveying coursework to qualify for the Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) exam. The Surveying and Mapping certificate offers a pathway for qualified professionals (particularly those mid-career in engineering, construction, GIS, and environmental fields) to prepare for advanced surveying roles by focusing exclusively on Survey and Mapping coursework.

This certificate program is for students who have already completed a bachelor's degree and are seeking credentials in the field of geomatics, land surveying, or a related profession. This program enables post-degree students to gain needed academic competencies within an accredited framework. Students leave better prepared for the Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) exam and their professional licensure pursuit.

Focused, Efficient Curriculum

Certificate students receive a focused, efficient curriculum based on survey licensure preparation. Learn to identify, analyze, and tackle broad technical or scientific challenges by exploring mathematics, science, and discipline-specific knowledge. Required courses are related to potential licensure competencies, including boundary law, ethics, geodesy, GIS, measurement science, and least-squares analysis. 

This program is delivered through asynchronous online courses. 

Coursework may be completed online, but hands-on lab classes require fieldwork. Students who enroll in online classes have the option to make arrangements to complete lab requirements off-campus. Those who choose this option will need to make arrangements with a Professional Licensed Surveyor who will assist in administering lab assignments at off-campus locations. Please contact the department for information about fieldwork requirements or proctored exams.

Professional Licensure Information: ETSU offers programs that meet Tennessee’s professional licensure or certification requirements; however, these may not meet the requirements in other states or territories. Students who plan to work outside of Tennessee should review ETSU's professional licensure information or contact the academic department for details on whether this program’s curriculum meets the educational requirements for licensure or certification in your state.

Program-Specific Admissions Requirements

  • Previously earned bachelor's degree required.
  • Students enrolling in the certificate must be employed and working under the supervision of a licensed land surveyor.
  • Prerequisite MATH 1910 or equivalent test scores required.
  • For those needing a bachelor's degree, the Surveying and Mapping bachelor's degree is also available with mostly online coursework.

  • Step 2: Sign In to the ETSU Application Portal and Start a New Application
    Sign in to the ETSU Application Portal and select "Start a New Application."

  • Step 3: Complete the Application
    Choose "Undergraduate," select your student type and start term, then choose a major and complete the application. *Your application is not complete without requesting/submitting supporting documents (transcripts, test scores, etc.).
