About the Advisor Growth Program (AGP)
The Advisor Growth Program (AGP) is an optional, professional development opportunity designed to support Professional Undergraduate Academic Advisors as they continue to grow within the advising profession. Through intentional activities in professional development, leadership, innovation, and college/university service, advisors can build their skills, expand their professional engagement, and develop experiences that may support their Career Ladder journey.
Structure
The Advisor Growth Program (AGP) is designed to follow a comprehensive, highly-structured one-year onboarding/training, after the advisor has built a foundation within the profession.
While the program is designed to assist, support, and provide guidance to advisors who might be seeking advancement through the Career Ladder, completion of the program does not guarantee advancement.
Eligibility & Participant Criteria
Professional Undergraduate Academic Advisors with at least 1 year of advising experience at ETSU are eligible to join the Advisor Growth Program (AGP).
Advisors will have the opportunity to sign up as a program participant twice per year, December and May. The OEDAA will announce the timeframe, deadline, and details through the Advising Weekly email sent on Fridays at 8AM.
Advisors will fill out an interest form, including the following details:
- First & Last Name

Satisfying Program Requirements
Advisors satisfy the requirements of this program through completion of the specified number of activities in each Category for the Track in which they are following. The activities for the Advisor Growth Program follow the framework of the Career Ladder in which advisors move from self-development and building awareness of the advising profession (Track 2), to becoming an active professional contributor (Track 3), to demonstrating professional leadership (Track 4).
Once an advisor has completed a minimum of 3 activities for the Track they are following, they could opt to complete additional activities aligned with a higher Track, but advisors are not expected to complete higher-level activities until they are pursuing advancement to that Tier.
Submitting Program Completion Evidence
Advisors will submit evidence of activity completion on the D2L ADMN Advisor Growth Program course. Advisors who are pursuing advancement through the Career Ladder should note that the Certificate of Completion of the Advisor Growth Program should not be submitted in lieu of submitting the actual evidence/activities for their Career Ladder portfolio. Advisors should submit the actual evidence, activities, and outcomes as the supplemental materials for the Career Ladder portfolio.
Advisors can provide their own suggestions for an activity they will complete for each category, to include the rationale regarding how the activity relates to their advising practice. Suggestions should be submitted to the D2L ADMN Advisor Growth Program course and will be reviewed for approval by the Work Group.
- NOTE: Activities should be completed from the time the advisor starts the Advisor Growth Program. The intention of the program is growth and development moving forward, and activities completed prior to the start of the program may count toward the advisors’ Career Ladder portfolio but will not count toward the Advisor Growth Program if completed prior to the start of the program.
An advisor cannot submit the same activity that was already submitted for a category while pursuing a prior Track (activities should demonstrate growth within the profession and therefore should be “new” or advanced activities completed within the timeframe of pursuit of each Track).
- EXAMPLE: An advisor could demonstrate a more in-depth interaction within the same activity/material, demonstrating movement from participation and building awareness of the advising profession (Track 2) to active contribution (Track 3) to leadership (Track 4).
Completion Timeline
Advisors pursuing this program will not be expected to complete the program within a specific timeline or deadline, but the minimum amount of time in which an advisor should complete the program is 1 year, to allow the advisor sufficient time for learning, self-reflective practice, and growth.
Recognition of Program Completion
Those who complete the program will receive:
- A digital Program Completion Certificate
- A letter notifying the Advisor’s supervisor of successful completion of the program
- Name listed on the Advisor Growth Program website
- Recognition at the Academic Advisement Awards Ceremony
