Undergraduate Awards
The Dr. Herman O'Dell Award Endowment
Description
This endowment was created in 1999 in memoriam of Dr. Herman O'Dell, who served as a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences from 1949-1969. Dr. O'Dell was a member of the Botanical Society of America and leader of both the Wildflower Pilgrimage at Gatlinburg and Botanical Group at Roan Mountain.
Application Criteria
- The applicant must be a junior, majoring in Biological Science.
- Selection will not be made on the basis of GPA alone, but also on service, research interest, commitment to the major, and extra-curricular activities.
The Outstanding Senior Award
Description
This award was created by the Department of Biological Sciences faculty in order to recognize a senior with outstanding achievements in academics, research, and service.
Application Criteria
- The applicant must be a senior, majoring in Biological Sciences.
- Selection will not be made on the basis of GPA alone, but on service, research interest, commitment to the major, and extra-curricular activities.
The Barclay-Moore Undergraduate Research Fellowship Endowment
Description
This endowment was established by Dr. J. Michael Kelly in honor of Dr. Frank Barclay and Dr. J. D. Moore, both were important research mentors and professors during the time Dr. Kelly was an undergraduate student with the Department of Biological Sciences.
Application Criteria
- The applicant must be pursuing an undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences who has completed all Biology major core courses.
- Applicants should have identified a research mentor who is a faculty member in the Department of Biological Sciences or who has adjunct status in the department.

The Dr. Denise I. Pav Endowment
Description
This endowment was established in honor of Dr. Denise I. Pav, a long-time faculty member of the Department of Biological Sciences at ETSU.
Application Criteria
- The applicant must be a U.S. citizen, Canadian citizen, or landed immigrant.
- The applicant must be pursuing a graduate degree in the Department of Biological Sciences.
- Applicant must have a minimum 3.4 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
- Preference shall be granted based on financial need.
The William Harvey Fraley and Nina M. Fraley Memorial Award Endowment
Description
This endowment was established by Ms. Janet Fraley Hayton, acting upon the wishes of Nina M. Fraley.
Application Criteria
- The applicant must be a graduate student in the Department of Biological Sciences.
- The applicant must meet the minimum requirements of the graduate school program.
- Applicants must demonstrate promise in scientific research and for achievement following graduation.
- Applicants must submit a 1-2 page statement summarizing the purpose of their research and methods that will be applied. They will discuss how this research will provide increased scientific knowledge in molecular, cellular, or organismal biology.
The Marcia Davis Biological Sciences Research Award
Description
This fund was established by Marcia Davis who received her Master of Science degree from the Department of Biological Sciences in 1974 and was a Biology Instructor at Kingsport University Center for three years following her graduation. Ms. Davis is an active worker for the conservation of the natural resources of Tennessee and for the preservation of our national heritage for future generations.
Application Criteria
- The applicant must be a graduate student in the Department of Biological Sciences.
- The applicant must meet the minimum requirements of the graduate school program.
- Applicants must demonstrate promise in scientific research and for achievement following graduation.
- Applicants must submit a 1-2 page statement summarizing the purpose of their research and methods that will be applied. They will discuss how this research will provide increased scientific knowledge that can contribute to the preservation of the natural resources of Tennessee. This statement should also include information detailing how the award will be used to facilitate their research.
Geraldine Rita Slemp Memorial Award
Description
This fund was established by Dr. Cecilia McIntosh, Professor Emerita of the Department of Biological Sciences, in honor of her mother. It supports experiential learning, travel, and research opportunities for international students enrolled in the East Tennessee State University M.S. Biology degree program.
Application Criteria
- The applicant must be a graduate student in the Department of Biological Sciences.
- The applicant must meet the minimum requirements of the graduate school program.
- The applicant must be an international student.
Undergraduate/Graduate Award
YYY Award
Description
The YYY Award was established in memory of Yury Yampolsky, a chemist with interests in polymer science and membrane technology, and of Galina Yampolsky, a chemist with interests in colloid and protein chemistry, by their son, Lev Yampolsky, a biologist with interests in evolutionary genomics and ecology. This award is managed by Biological Sciences and Chemistry.
Application Criteria
- Applications should be submitted to the Scholarship Committee by March 1st of each year.
- The applicants must be a delcared Biological Sciences or Chemistry major.
- The applicants may be undergraduate or graduate level students.
- Preference shall be given to applicants who have coauthored publications in their field.
- Applicants must meet all requirements for regular admission to ETSU.
- Applicants must be full-time.
