ETSU Family Physicians of Johnson City

Residency Programs

Curriculum Overview

The Johnson City Family Medicine Residency Program is a community-based residency located on the campus of East Tennessee State University, a population of 14,000. Our well-balanced and integrated allopathic and osteopathic curriculum emphasizes prevention and patient education, medical diagnosis, office-based procedures, patient-centered communications and biopsychosocial approaches, therapeutic management, practice management, lifestyle modification and physician wellness. In addition to the rotations and curriculum, we offer you the opportunity to tailor your education to your interests.

During the first year, residents spend the majority of time on inpatient rotations. In the second and third years, increasing emphasis is placed on office practice and more time is allotted to following an established patient panel in the Family Medicine Center. To enhance our programs focus on prevention and health promotion, residents complete a two-week rotation on lifestyle modification learning and using proper techniques to promote lasting change. Activities are designed to focus on clinical prevention and community education/screenings through participation in local health fairs and presentations on prevention topics. The overall goal is to understand the importance of prevention/health promotion in the lives of our patients and the community, and to teach residents how to incorporate a prevention focus into their patient care.

The Johnson City Medical Center (JCMC) is our primary affiliate hospital and includes 488 beds, 10 neonatal intensive care, 16 surgical intensive care and 4 pediatric intensive care. Additionally, JCMC has a birthing center, a comprehensive rehabilitation unit, cardiac catheterization and open heart surgery, renal transplantation center, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy, and a wellness center. James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VA) is our secondary affiliate hospital. It has a reputation as a true state-of-the-art tertiary care center, with 420-bed hospital, modern 120-bed nursing home, and a 600-patient domiciliary. Here you have the opportunity to assume primary functions during internal medicine and general surgery rotations.
