Kingsport Family Medicine Residency Program
Program Overview
Thank you for your interest in our residency! We are excited to tell you more about our program and the role that it plays in the community. Not only do we strive for academic excellence, we also strive to provide multidisciplinary care to the people we serve here in the region. We are dedicated to providing an educational experience tailored to your educational needs, including being the only program in the region with osteopathically recognized training. Our faculty will help facilitate your transition from a brand new intern to an independent family physician.
We believe that to provide you with the best in educational and professional opportunities, we must continually reevaluate and adapt our curriculum to meet the educational needs of our residents and the community. We also believe it is important to balance education and hard work with wellness and fun. To achieve this we have peer groups so that every month where you will have dedicated time to spend doing educational activities with your resident peers, our monthly potluck lunches for the whole office, and our 4 weeks of orientation during your first year. Our faculty have received multiple local and national nominations and awards recognizing their outstanding accomplishments, and our small faculty-to-resident ratio of 1:3 provides a tight knit atmosphere for learning, professional development and a collegial working environment.
During residency, you will experience many the joys and challenges that family medicine training provides. Each resident will be assigned an advisor who will walk alongside you during this time and help you grow and succeed along the way.
The Kingsport Family Medicine Residency is a community-based residency nestled in the mountains of East Tennessee providing care to the people of Appalachia. Established in 1975, we have trained over 200 residents that have gone on to practice everything from full spectrum family medicine, to sports medicine, hospital medicine and everything in between. We will help prepare you for any practice setting you desire.

Overview
On our hospital service, you will be working with a supervising family physician at all times. The resident team will be comprised of three daytime and two night float residents, with at least 1 upper year resident on the service at all time to provide guidance, education, and support.
The patients on our hospital service range from needing overnight observation to closely monitoring them in the ICU alongside our specialty colleagues. The pathology on our hospital service is excellent and daunting. The social determinates of health can be explored even further with the help of our behavioral health team, and medication management can be assisted by our full time inpatient pharmacy team dedicated to working with our family medicine service.
For your inpatient pediatric training, you will be working with the pediatric hospitalist service and specialists at our Niswonger children’s hospital in order to get a high volume and high acuity inpatient pediatric experience.
We also work in a second smaller hospital in Kingsport for your obstetrics, nursery, and pediatric ED rotations. The pediatric ED is new as of 2022, and the pediatric volume continues to grow.
In addition to your hospital training, you will have opportunities for rotations with outpatient medical specialty offices, free clinics, rural practices, high schools for longitudinal care in sports medicine, and even opportunities to teach groups of elderly people in the community.
During your residency, you will progressively move toward independent practice, integrating evidence-based medicine and information mastery to develop the skills necessary to enhance your lifelong learning as a practicing physician. Below is an example of what your schedule will look like during each year of the program.
