Application Requirements

Thank you for your interest in the Rural Maternal Child Health Fellowship Program!

Eligibility

Applicants must:

• Successfully complete an ACGME-accredited family medicine residency.
• Be board eligible or board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.
• Possess a Tennessee medical license.
• Provide a verifiable procedure log documenting a minimum of 50 vaginal deliveries and 25 cesarean assists within the past two years.
• Demonstrate a commitment to practicing in rural Tennessee.

Interested applicants should email Program Director Chase Mussard, MD, at mussard@etsu.edu to receive access to the online application. Applications open Aug. 15.

Applicants should be prepared to submit:

• Curriculum vitae
• Personal statement addressing:
  • Why they are pursuing rural family medicine-obstetrics fellowship training
  • Their background and interest in rural maternal-child health in Tennessee
  • Their commitment to practicing in rural Tennessee for five years following completion of the fellowship, including where and how they plan to practice
• At least three letters of recommendation, including:
  • One from the applicant's residency program director
  • One from an obstetrical physician (OB-GYN or FMOB) with direct experience working with the applicant who can attest to the applicant's clinical competence, professionalism, teamwork and surgical aptitude
• Family medicine residency verification of good standing or expected graduation
• Copies of medical school transcript and USMLE exam scores and attempts

Application Timeline

Interviews will be conducted on a rolling basis, with virtual and in-person options available. Travel expenses for some applicants may be covered, including airfare, lodging and meals.

Acceptances will also be offered on a rolling basis. The anticipated fellowship start date is Aug. 1, 2027.

This program is funded through a subaward from the Tennessee Department of Health’s Rural Health Transformation Program, an awardee of the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Rural Health Transformation Program.
