High School Student Opportunities

In an effort to increase the number of primary care physicians who choose to practice in rural areas, the Division of Rural and Community Programs has sought to have a greater influence upon high school students during a period which is critical to their career determinations.

Rural high school students eyeing a career in medicine can get an early glimpse into the field by attending the annual Rural High School Medical Camp and Doc for a Day, hosted by the Quillen College of Medicine. The camp encourages the students to consider a career that previously may have appeared out of reach and gives them a set of experiences to guide them for preparation for entering medical school. High school students interested in rural or primary care medicine - should apply to the program – space is limited.

High School Opportunities

• 2023 Rural High School Medical Camp: June 17-21, 2024

  For rising seniors or recent graduates, the program is organized around a week-long summer camp for up to 20 rural high school students. Students will be introduced to disciplines of medicine with hands on experience, learn about admissions to both East Tennessee State University and the Quillen College of Medicine, and provided with a brief tour of both campuses.

  This year’s programs will include lectures and some hands-on experiences. Some of the most popular programs have included Gross Anatomy, Human Simulation Lab and Public Health. 

   

• 2023 Doc for a Day: June 7, 2024

  For rising juniors, we offer a one-day summer event to introduce you to ETSU and the Quillen College of Medicine. This event will include a campus tour, special discussions from admissions counselors, tours of the anatomy lab and simulation center, and the ability to meet the Associate Dean and the Director for Rural and Community Programs. Lunch will be provided.

Eligibility

Tennessee students from rural high schools as well as out-of-state counties that border Northeast Tennessee are eligible for these programs.

The application deadline is April 25, 2024.


Students will be informed of their acceptance via an email no later than May 1, 2024.
