East Tennessee State University devotes considerable resources into uplifting the
mental health not only of faculty, staff and students, but the Appalachian Highlands region, as
well.
And earlier this month, ETSU President Dr. Brian Noland signed a proclamation designating
September as “Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.”
“Nationally, campuses are witnessing a mental health crisis,” said Noland. “The recognition
is not just an acknowledgment of the seriousness of the issue but a call to action for each one of us.”
The university promotes a range of activities and steps to achieve better mental health.
That includes physical activity, a balanced diet and adequate sleep. Forest Walks, yoga classes and a workout at the Basler Center for Physical Activity are other options to boost
mood and emotional well-being.
The ETSU Counseling Center is a tremendous resource.
While staff encourage anyone experiencing a life-threatening emergency to call 911,
the center offers options for anyone going through an emotional crisis. To speak to
a licensed counselor, call (423) 439-4841 and press 2 when promoted. A licensed counselor
will take your call.
