The Creative Arts Scholarship Program is for first-time, out-of-state graduate and undergraduate students, including international and transfer students. Applicants must be accepted to ETSU before they will be considered for a Creative Arts Scholarship.
The ETSU Speech & Debate Team is a student organization that provides university students with a place to practice and sharpen their public speaking and debating skills. Team members are encouraged to participate in competitive tournaments each semester, representing ETSU on a local, state, and national level. Student compete in Individual Events (IE), Parliamentary Debate (NPDA), and one-on-one debate (IPDA).
Application Process
In addition to documentation of the student's academic record and ETSU admission status, a completed application will include the following:
- Link to an uploaded video (YouTube) that demonstrates the student’s speaking and/or debating skills. This can be a recording of an individual speech or a recording of the student participating in a live debate.
- A 200-250-word essay that summarizes the student's experience with speech or debate, an explanation of their desired level of involvement with the team, and a description of any competitive goals they may hope to achieve during their college career.
- A 10-15-minute interview (via Zoom) with a Speech and Debate Team representative.
Maintaining the Scholarship
In addition to the requirements set forth by the scholarship office, the specific requirements for maintaining a Creative Arts Scholarship in Speech and Debate Team are:
- Major in Communication Studies or Minor in Communication Studies or Storytelling
- Must include COMM 2325 Speech and Debate Team (6 Credits)
- Attend weekly meetings of the Speech and Debate Team.
- Become a speech and/or debate competitor for ETSU.
- Compete in two tournaments per semester.
- Participate in other team activities (e.g., recruitment, team-building, practices)
