Reflection on Using High-Impact Teaching Practices
Teaching both online and on-ground sections of the same class, I worked to apply the training and approaches received in the General Education Instructor’s Institute across both class modalities. I modified and redesigned activities for deployment across both modalities with a focus on the thinking routine* “People, Parts, & Interactions” and active strategies which included Frayer models and small-group collaboration activities around central concepts and case studies. These changes were in addition to previous HITPs learned through CTE activities/events.
Students appreciated the new experiences, based on SI feedback, and expressed appreciation for the structured aspects of socialization. I plan to continue these activities in Spring semester courses with modifications built around deployment (time allotted in planning) and designing smaller, more modular components, that allow for more rapid feedback.
Reflection on Gen Ed Scholars Institute
Overall the Institute was a positive and motivating experience for modifying courses and provided a structured overview and ideas for implementation.
