CTE Position Statement on Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI)
The CTE recognizes that many ethical concerns and considerations exist around the development and use of Generative AI. GenAI operations significantly drain environmental resources and may exploit worker rights. In addition, there are valid concerns regarding the potential for overdependence on GenAI, resulting in a loss of critical thinking capacities.
There are equally compelling ethics on the other side of the coin: Multiple industries now indicate that workers who do not know how to appropriately use GenAI in their jobs will fall behind - or perhaps not be hired at all. Further, GenAI offers opportunities for students to boost their learning in individualized ways (e.g., through clarifying conversations with chatbots).
The CTE is mindful of all of these competing concerns. To the extent that GenAI is unlikely to go away, and given that the CTE's mission is to ensure student success, we believe our best direction forward is to learn about GenAI and help our instructors to do the same, so that they can share best practices and important conversations around the ethics of GenAI with their students.
