Program Overview
The Mathematics Major with a concentration in Mathematics Teacher Education is for students who wish to teach at the secondary level (grades 6-12). The coursework prepares students with both content and pedagogical knowledge to successfully teach in a middle or high school.
Students take foundational courses including calculus, linear algebra, and probability and statistics; then, they move into upper-level mathematics courses. Professional education courses that prepare students to take their content knowledge and apply it to the classroom are included in this concentration. The program culminates in an undergraduate research project in conjunction with a mathematics faculty member and a year-long residency in which a student works in a secondary classroom with a veteran mentor teacher.
