The Department of Mathematics & Statistics offers many areas of coursework for our various majors & minors. We have provided brief descriptions of some of our commonly frequented to classes. for more information, check out the ETSU Undergraduate Catalog for the most up-to-date courses for each degree.

Learning Support in Math

Real number sense and operations; operations with algebraic expressions; analyzing graphs; solving linear equations and proportions; modeling and critical thinking. Exact topics will be determined by a student's diagnostic test score (given at the first class meeting).

Undergraduate Research

Undergraduate Research is a capstone project typically taken by Senior level undergraduates. Students usually work one-on-one or in small teams with a faculty advisor. The specifics of the project are determined by the student and their faculty advisor. When discussing possible projects with a potential advisor, students are encouraged to consider the following questions:

  • What Math courses/topics do you find particularly interesting?
  • Is there a topic/area of Mathematics that was not covered in your courses that you would like to know more about?
  • What do you want to get out of the Undergraduate Research class?
  • What do you want to do once you leave ETSU?

The research aspect of the class need not be original research. In some cases, the course acts more like an independent study so that the student can learn more about a topic that they would like to know more about. This being the case, publication is not a requirement for the Undergraduate Research project. However, if you have goals that include furthering your education in Graduate School, then some of our students have had excellent luck in publishing their work in peer-reviewed journals.

Honors students typically take Honors Thesis instead of Undergraduate Research.
