Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology

Overview 

The ETSU Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is dedicated to equipping medical students and resident physicians to provide high-quality, comprehensive care to our patients. In addition to the care offered by our attending physicians, resident physicians, and nurse practitioners, our team includes case managers and specialists in nutrition and lactation.

Our Medication Assisted Therapy (MAT) Program is a trailblazing initiative that provides prenatal care, medication-assisted therapy, case management, and psychological support in one setting. Beginning in April 2022, integrated behavioral health care from a licensed psychologist also became available to all our patients.

Medical education is a top priority for the department. We take pride in preparing residency graduates to serve in underserved communities where they are needed most. Our residency program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and offers training from both ETSU faculty physicians and community-based OB/GYN physicians.

Research is another key pillar of our academic mission. Every resident physician participates in at least one research project under the guidance of faculty mentors. Our research coordinator assists faculty and residents with institutional review board (IRB) requirements and other obligations, and statistical analysis support is available through the College of Medicine.

The department’s goal is to improve the well-being and physical health of women throughout Northeast Tennessee and the greater Southern Appalachian region. Central to achieving that goal is our mission to educate the next generation of physicians and health care providers.

  To accomplish our mission, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and its residency program is dedicated to:

  • Training future OB/GYN physicians in the art of administering empathetic and efficient medical care to all women in the region, regardless of age.
  • Providing primary as well as advanced fellowship-trained subspecialty Obstetric and Gynecologic care to all women in all segments of our region.
  • Utilizing our abilities to conduct research and scholarly activity that enhances our evidence-based knowledge to bring superior primary care to all of our patients.

  To advance the health care of the community and the region, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology relies upon:

  • Active clinical services across the width and depth of the discipline of Obstetrics and Gynecology located in superb clinical sites in the region.
  • State-of-the-art simulation facilities utilized by all faculty, resident physicians, and medical students.
  • Clinical research opportunities with an emphasis on quality improvement projects as well as publishable articles.
  • Protected time for didactics for our faculty, resident physicians, and medical students.
