Overview
The Division of Surgical Research is committed to providing our researchers, surgeon-scientists, residents, postdoctoral fellows, medical students and graduate students with the resources to advance the frontiers of biomedical research with the ultimate goal of improving health care at the national and international levels. Our faculty have consistently achieved impressive levels of NIH funding in the areas of sepsis, immunotherapy, organ injury, retinal biology, aging and cardiovascular disease. The Division offers a broad array of research opportunities to individuals seeking careers in biomedical science and academic surgery.
David Williams, Ph.D., has served as the Carroll H. Long Chair of Excellence for Surgical Research since July 2017. The chair is named in honor of Johnson City native Carroll Hardy Long, a professor emeritus. Before Williams’ appointment, Race Kao, Ph.D., held the Carroll Long Chair of Excellence from 1992 to 2017.

Primary functions of the Chairholder:
- To advise and guide the resident in research
- To promote the faculty research involvement
- To supervise the student learning research procedures
- To support the departmental teaching activities
- To present and publish scientific findings
- To obtain funding for research projects
- To serve as consultant to other department
- To strengthen the institutional teaching, patient care and research programs
- To enhance the institutional recognition by public and professional communities
